Brazilian National Education Conference references the Abidjan Principles

The Brazilian Campaign for the Right to Education (BCRE), is actively participating in the formulation of the new National Education Plan (PNE) for the next decade and contributed to the organisation of the National Education Conference (CONAE) 2024, which took place between January 28 and January 30, 2024. The BCRE presented a set of proposals to support the discussion and implementation of the new PNE. During the national CONAE event BCRE coordinated the debates and deliberations of axis II, which deals with the concept of the right to education and the overview of all stages and modalities of education, from early childhood education to higher education.

The BCRE’s suggestion that the Abidjan Principles be referenced in the CONAE texts regarding Human Rights and the regulation of private and community sector participation in education, in axis II. This initial suggestion was approved by the educational community in all states of the country and at all levels, from local to national, at CONAE and led to a pedagogical discussion about what Abidjan Principles are and how important they are.

In the coming months, the Ministry of Education will be considering civil society demands and incorporating them into the bill that will be sent to Congress to discuss and approve the new National Education Plan. During this period, the BCRE will be advocating for the inclusion of the amendments emerging from CONAE into the new plan, including the Abidjan Principles, to reinforce the right to education in Brazil.
